Drama Overview

Term 1: Set skills via devising (Comp 1)

Students will be given the theme of the '7 Deadly Sins' to devise new material from. Students will begin by practically exploring themes, sharing ideas and then plan and rehearse their piece. Students will start their portfolio which documents the devising process. Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities in the theatre including activities they may undertake on a day to day basis and the aspects of the production for which they are accountable. All students will be expected to perform aspects of their work at the Becket Keys Open Evening in September.

  1. Students are marked out of 15 for their practical ability based on their characterisation, physicality and vocality.

    Students are marked out of 30 for their portfolio document and 15 for their evaluation.

Term 3: Devising for Comp 1

Students will be given a variety of stimuli to devise new material from. Students will begin by practically exploring themes, sharing ideas and then plan and rehearse their piece. Students will start their portfolio which documents the devising process. Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities in the theatre including activities they may undertake on a day to day basis and the aspects of the production for which they are accountable.

Term 2: Set text for Comp 3 (DNA)

Students will explore DNA by Dennis Kelly. Study will involve developing knowledge and understanding of the characteristics and context of the whole play and exploring ideas for how the play may be interpreted practically.

  1. A series of set questions linked with the Comp.3 exam section A.
Traverse stage

Theatrical stage in which the audience is predominantly on two sides of the stage, facing towards each other.

Proscenium stage

A structure of stage at the front of the stage that frames the action of the play. It can be square or arched.

Theatre in the round

Arena stage, central stage or island stage, completely surrounded by the audience.

Term 5: Set text for Comp 3 (DNA)

Students will explore DNA by Dennis Kelly. Study will involve developing knowledge and understanding of the characteristics and context of the whole play and exploring ideas for how the play may be interpreted practically. Students will also explore how design elements such as set design, lighting, sound and costume could be used to enhance the production.

Students will be expected to perform their final piece of work to an invited audience.

  1. Marks awarded for the practical are out of 15.

    Marks awarded for the portfolio are out of 30.

    Marks awarded for the evaluation are out of 15.
