Enrichment inc. PSHE & Careers Overview

Term 1: Applying for Jobs

Students learn how to how to write a curriculum vitae and a covering letter, as well as how to develop their interview skills. As part of this, they find out how to research a particular career, job and company, plus learn what a job description and person specification are.

  1. Students can produce a curriculum vitae and/or a covering letter for a real or fictional job and then get feedback. This is optional for students who are going to university, but compulsory for students who will or might be applying for apprenticeships.

Develop the individual:

Students develop skills that they will need to use in the future and are able to discover more about potential careers.

Create a supportive community:

Term 2: Personal Wellbeing

Students find out about the risks related to binge drinking and gambling, including how these will grow in the next few years. With the former, they learn the short and long term physical and emotional consequences, plus how to stay safe when drinking alcohol. With the latter, they discover how young adults (especially males) are targeted by gambling companies and how to spot whether they or someone they know are becoming addicted. With both, they understand where to find help if needed.

Students also learn strategies to manage their stress and improve their mental health. This is scheduled for around the time of their mock examinations to help them during this period. Following their mock examinations, activities from ‘The A Level Mindset’ by Martin Griffin and Steve Oakes are introduced to support students in making progress in a calm and efficient manner.

Develop the individual:

Students learn how to avoid risks and where to get help if needed. They also learn strategies to develop their mental health for the better.

Create a supportive community:

Students learn how to support others who are acting in risky ways or have poor mental health.

Term 3: Student Finance and Budgeting

Students learn about all relevant aspects of student finance, including how to apply for this, and strategies for budgeting when at university or starting an apprenticeship. This is scheduled for the same term as their parents will attend a presentation on the same topics.

Students understand more about areas of finance that will soon be relevant to them and learn skills that will support them over the next years.

Term 4: Feminism

Students learn about the history of the feminist movement and why there is still the need for feminism in our own society. The critical thinking and debating skills they developed in Year 12 are used as they undertake wider reading around this subject, then debate different viewpoints. This unit also builds on the topic of public sexual harassment (PSH) that students studied in Year 12, with the link between how often women are the victims of PSH and the need for women to be treated equally in society clear.

Note: other important topics of a similar nature are also integrated as appropriate, with movements such as Black Lives Matters discussed too.

  1. Assessment – Students participate in a debate and are assessed on their use of diverse sources, the cohesion of their argument, their critical thinking skills and their ability to sustain a broad and deep debate over a period of time.

Develop the individual:

Students develop their own individual views and learn the importance of reinforcing these with evidence. They also learn to think critically about sources that might influence them and important contemporary issues.

Create a supportive community:

Open discussions in which students respect, care for and trust each other enable them to learn from varied views and experiences. Students also learn how to challenge other viewpoints in the correct manner.

Term 5: Workplace Rights and Responsibilities

Students learn about these workplace rights and responsibilities:

1. Workplace bullying

2. Health and safety

3. Date protection and confidentiality

4. Cybersecurity

5. Trade unions

6. Whistleblowing

7. Employment law.

Develop the individual:

Students develop an understanding of important rights and responsibilities as they start of their careers. They can enter the world of work knowing what to do in certain situations and how to protect themselves and others.
