Physical Education Overview

Block 1 : Basketball/Rugby/Netball/Gymnastics + Dance

Netball - Students will refine and advance their skills in shooting, passing, and footwork, focusing on precision, timing, and consistency. They will deepen their understanding of positional play, learning advanced tactics and strategies specific to their role on the court, whether it be in attack or defense. Emphasis will be placed on creating space, accurate passing under pressure, and developing decision-making skills to outwit opponents Basketball – Students will build on the competitive skills acquired throughout KS3, refining their techniques in dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense. Focus will be placed on developing more advanced skills, such as off-the-ball movement, setting screens, and executing plays under pressure. As the unit progresses, students will engage in more competitive situations, applying these advanced skills and strategies in game scenarios to enhance their decision-making, teamwork, and overall game awareness. Rugby - Students will learn the core principles of passing, receiving, and potentially tackling in rugby, focusing on developing effective techniques for both attack and defense. They will explore tactical movements, such as attacking space, supporting teammates, and positioning for effective defense. Emphasis will be placed on teamwork and communication as students learn to defend as a cohesive unit and execute attacking strategies. Through drills and small-sided games,

Looking at the positives and negatives of a performance.

Fast Break

A counter attack turning defence into attack.

Footwork

Vital skill to be success in netball, learning to land on one foot and then pivot can help you move the ball into different areas.

Foul

An offence caused when one player makes contact with another player.

Interception

winning possession of the ball as it is being passed from one opposition to another

Jump Stop

A method of stopping, landing on two feet at the same time.

Lay Up

A method of scoring after a dribble.

Movement

moving to enable yourself to be able to receive the ball

Outlet

A pass out of defence.

Passing

The purpose of passing is to keep possession of the ball by manoeuvring the ball on the ground or air between players.

Possession

keeping the football with your team mates

Rebound

Winning the ball after it hits the backboard from a shot.

Strategy

a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim.

Travelling

Walking with the ball.

Centre Pass

A centre pass occurs after a goal has been scored, when the Centre passes the ball. A short pass is a pass between two players on the same team, where the length of the pass is so short that a defensive player cannot get between the two opposing players.

Replay Ball

A player may tap or deflect the ball, let it bounce and then take possession and throw it. The player cannot catch the ball with both hands, drop it and pick it up again; this is called a replayed ball.

Block 2: Rugby/HRF/Basketball/Netball

Term 3: HRF/Football/OAA/Badminton

Badminton – Students will recap their basic skills in serving, rallying, and shot placement through a variety of progressive drills. There will be a strong emphasis on developing a variety of shots, such as clears, drops, smashes, and net shots.. As the unit progresses, students will engage in competitive matches, where they can apply their skills in real game situations, with a focus on tactical awareness, court positioning, and teamwork in singles/doubles play. Some focus will be placed on their ability to officiate a game and apply their knowledge to their in game performance. Football - Students will learn how to keep possession as an individual, as a team, they will learn basic attacking moves including shooting, and basic defensive moves including making tackles. Health Related Fitness - Students will develop an understanding of how circuit training works and how it can benefit levels of health and fitness. Students will discover different ways to improve their self-motivation and thus their mental toughness. Their stamina will improve when intensive fitness lessons are matched by fitness activities at home. OAA – Outdoor Adventurous Activity Students engage in dynamic team-building activities and design their own orienteering challenges, enabling them to explore the school grounds and field. They will compete in locating flags and key landmarks, honing their navigational skills, strategic thinking, and teamwork in a competitive environment.

High Serve

a high and deep serve to the back of the court.

Short serve

a low serve aimed at dropping into the service box.

Overhead Clear

this is an over arm shot aimed at pushing your opponent to the back of the court.

Smash

an aggressive shot aimed down to win the point.

Drop Shot

a disguised shot aimed at just dropping over the net.

Ready position

this is teh position that a player adopts in between shots.

Cardio-Vascular Endurance

Cardiovascular endurance is how efficiently your heart, blood vessels, and lungs to supply oxygen rich blood to working muscles during physical activity (aerobic activity like walking, running, cycling or playing a sport) for a prolonged period of time.

Muscular Endurance

Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to sustain repeated contractions against a resistance for an extended period of time.

Flexibility

Flexibility is defined as the range of motion of your joints or the ability of your joints to move freely. It also refers to the mobility of your muscles, which allows for more movement around the joints

Continous Training

Continuous training, also known as continuous exercise, is any type of physical training that involves activity without rest intervals. Continuous training can be performed at low, moderate exercise intensities.

Interval Training

In an interval session, high-intensity periods of work are interspersed with rest intervals. In this way athletes can cover more distance at a high intensity than they could if they worked continuously.

Fartlek

Fartlek, a Swedish term that means "speed play," is a form of interval or speed training that can be effective in improving your running speed and endurance. Fartlek running involves varying your pace throughout your run, alternating between fast segments

Circuit Training

A typical circuit training workout includes about 8-10 exercise stations. After completing a station, instead of resting, you move quickly to the next station.

Block 4: Football/Badminton/Hockey/Trampolining

Football - Students will learn how to keep possession as an individual, as a team, they will learn basic attacking moves including shooting, and basic defensive moves including making tackles. Badminton – Students will recap their basic skills in serving, rallying, and shot placement through a variety of progressive drills. There will be a strong emphasis on developing a variety of shots, such as clears, drops, smashes, and net shots.. As the unit progresses, students will engage in competitive matches, where they can apply their skills in real game situations, with a focus on tactical awareness, court positioning, and teamwork in singles/doubles play. Some focus will be placed on their ability to officiate a game and apply their knowledge to their in game performance. Hockey – Students will develop a strong foundation in the fundamental hockey skills, including passing, receiving, tackling, and shooting. They will be encouraged to experiment with different techniques and strategies, refining their ability to control the ball in various game situations. Emphasis will be placed on the correct body positioning, stick handling, and decision-making during both offensive and defensive play. Trampolining – Students will develop and refine their skills in trampolining, focusing on key techniques such as basic jumps, rotations, and seat, front and back landings. They will progress through a series of drills designed to improve their ability to perform controlled, higher-level moves. As the unit advances, students will learn to link skills together in fluid routines and will be challenged to perform under pressure. There will be a strong emphasis on safety and technique, as students work to improve their ability to execute more complex moves in a competitive setting.

Ruck

The ruck is a phase of play where one or more players from each team, who are on their feet, in physical contact, close around the ball on the ground.

Scrum

An ordered formation of players, used to restart play, in which the forwards of a team form up with arms interlocked and heads down, and push forward against a similar group from the opposing side

Tackle

Only the ball carrier can be tackled by an opposing player. A tackle occurs when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and is brought to ground, i.e. has one or both knees on the ground, is sitting on the ground or is on top of another player

Tactics

Tactics are the skills required in any game that allows a player or team to effectively use their talent and skill to the best possible advantage. Tactics are plans which are set up for a specific purpose during a performance or match.

    Athletics - Demonstrate a sprint start plus one track event plus one jump and one throw. Students will also be assessed in their ability to hurdle (4 flights). Assessment to be graded on the English Schools standards table.

Athletics

The sport of competing in track and field events, including running races and various competitions in jumping and throwing.

Track Event

Track is a sport which includes athletic contests established on the skills of running. Track is categorised under the umbrella sport of athletics, which also includes road running, cross country and running.

Field Event

Field is a sport which includes athletic contests established on the skills of jumping and throwing. Regular jumping events include long jump, triple jump, high jump, while the most common throwing events are shot put and discus.

Relay

A relay race is a track and field event in which athletes run a pre-set distance carrying a baton before passing it onto the next runner. Often, a relay team is a team of four sprinters.

Sprint Start

Sprinters begin the race by assuming a crouching position in the starting blocks before leaning forward and gradually moving into an upright position as the race progresses and momentum is gained.

Throw

To propel an object using the strength of your hands and arms.

Jump

To propel oneself into the air using one's legs to gain ether height (high jump) or distance (long or triple jump).

Upsweep

A method of transferring the baton.

Downsweep

A method of transferring the baton.

Lead Leg

The first leg that goes over the hurdle.

Trail Leg

The second leg that goes over the hurdle.

Endurance

The ability to pace yourself over an extended period of time.

Limb Speed

The ability to move the whole body quickly over a short distance.

Sprint

The ability to move the whole body quickly over a short distance.

Stride Pattern

The number of strides taken between hurdles.

Block 6: Athletics

Athletics - Students will improve on their levels of fitness in this unit of work, in particular stamina, speed, strength and power. For throwing events, students will have the opportunity to develop more advanced techniques used in the shot put, javelin and discus. Greater emphasis will be placed on student’s technique in jumping activities; they will gain knowledge and experience in the high, long and triple jump events. ‘Personal bests’ will be recorded and opportunities will be given for students to set new and improved personal bests. This provides the students with tangible evidence of progress in the various events.

A Drive

An attacking shot played to a half volley of a delivery.

A Sweep

A sweep is a cross bat shot played to a full delivery on the legs.

Appeal

the act of a bowler or fielder shouting at the umpire to ask if his last ball took the batsman's wicket. Usually phrased in the form of howzat (how-is-that?). Common variations include 'Howzee?' (how is he?), or simply turning to the umpire and shouting.

Backing Up

A batsman will back up at the non strikers end in order to make scoring a run easier. A fielder will back up fellow fielders by ensuring that they get behind the stumps when a throw is coming in.

Backstop

The fielder behind the batsman.

Bowled

A method of dismissal when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails.

Bowling Square

The area from which the bowler bowls.

Catch

A method of dismissal where the batsman hits the ball into the air to be caught without bouncing by one of the fielders.

Cut

An attacking shot played with a cross bat to a shot wide delivery.

Delivery

One bowl.

Forward defence

A defensive shot played to a delivery that will go on to hit the stumps.

Innings

One teams time to bat.

LBW

a method of dismissal when the ball hits the pads or body of the batsman which would have then gone onto hit the stumps.

Long Barrier

A secure method of fielding the ball when it is travelling quickly.

No Ball

When the ball is delivered incorrectly.

Over

6 deliveries

Runs

an individual score which is achieved by running between the wickets.

Short Barrier

A method of fielding when the ball is travelling slowly and needs to be intercepted.

Walking in

a tactic used by the fielding team to make it harder for the batsman to find the gaps.

Block 7: Cricket/Athletics/Softball/Rounders

Athletics - Students will improve on their levels of fitness in this unit of work, in particular stamina, speed, strength and power. For throwing events, students will have the opportunity to develop more advanced techniques used in the shot put, javelin and discus. Greater emphasis will be placed on student’s technique in jumping activities; they will gain knowledge and experience in the high, long and triple jump events. ‘Personal bests’ will be recorded and opportunities will be given for students to set new and improved personal bests. This provides the students with tangible evidence of progress in the various events. Cricket - Students will learn how to improve their reaction time, agility and co-ordination in order to collect the ball in the field rapidly. Students will build on their knowledge of tactics and strategy in the field to limit the number of runs scored. Students will dedicate time to refining medium pace bowling with accuracy and consistency being the main focus. Once this standard is met, students will be encouraged to experiment with changing the line, length and pace of delivery. Rounders – Students will develop their hitting, fielding, and tactical understanding of the game. The unit will focus on refining techniques such as grip, swing mechanics, and throwing accuracy. Students will also work on their ability to read the game and make quick decisions in the field. There will be an emphasis on teamwork, communication, and understanding the rules of the game. Towards the end of the unit, students will apply their skills in more competitive match situations, focusing on game awareness, positioning, and scoring strategies. Softball – Students will build on their basic throwing, catching, and hitting skills from earlier years, refining their technique in a more competitive environment.
