Pastoral Care

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” — Luke 16:10

We believe students thrive when their days are structured around purposeful activity, strong relationships, and healthy routines.

At Becket Keys, pastoral care is not something separate from the life of the school; it is built through it. Students are known, guided and supported through the daily rhythm where attention to the small, everyday habits of school life builds character over time. These habits are reinforced daily through the structure of the school day, the expectations we set, and the relationships students build with staff and each another. We believe that faithfulness in these small, daily actions is what ultimately shapes character.

A Clear and Structured Approach

Every student belongs to a tutor group (also their house) and is seen daily by their tutor. Tutors play a crucial role in supporting academic progress and personal development; they lead regular conversations about effort, habits, targets and conduct. This is not occasional or reactive support. It is consistent, structured and rooted in high expectations.

Our pastoral system is integrated with our academic monitoring. We do not separate “care” from “achievement”: both are part of helping each student flourish. By paying close attention to attendance, effort, conduct and progress, we ensure that every student is supported to build the habits that lead to success.

A Christian Vision of the Good Life

Our approach is shaped by a clear Christian understanding of human flourishing.

We believe that a good life is not found in withdrawal or self-absorption, but in:

  • commitment to meaningful work
  • service to others
  • participation in community life
  • the development of self-discipline and gratitude

Through daily acts of worship, tutor time, and the wider life of the school, students are encouraged to see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves. They learn that how they live, how they treat others, how they use their time and how they respond to challenge matters deeply.

Participation as the Norm

At Becket Keys, full participation in school life is the expectation.

Students attend 6 lessons a day, engage fully in all their studies, complete their homework, take part in assemblies and tutor activities, and contribute to the wider life of the school. This includes sport, music, drama, clubs and service opportunities.

We do not see any of these as optional. They are essential to a healthy, balanced and fulfilling school experience.

"It is through participation that students form friendships, discover interests, build resilience and develop confidence. In short, students feel better by doing, belonging and contributing."

Mr Scott-Evans, Head Teacher (Qualified National Mental Health Leader)

Developing Healthy Habits

We take a practical and proactive approach to student wellbeing.

Rather than focusing primarily on discussion or withdrawal from normal school life, we help students to build the habits that support long-term mental and physical health. These include:

  • daily attendance and high engagement in learning
  • consistent routines and good organisation
  • participation in physical activity and extra-curricular clubs (all students should attend at least one sporting activity)
  • healthy eating
  • hydration: free chilled and filtered drinking water is available in every building
  • positive friendships and responsible use of technology

These habits are reinforced daily through the structure of the school day, the expectations we set, and the relationships students build with staff and each another.

Mental Health: A Grounded Approach

We care deeply about the mental health of our students, and we take a clear, practical approach to supporting it. When students struggle, we respond with care, clarity and appropriate support.

However, we are clear that the most effective foundation for good mental health is not stepping away from the life of the school, but being steadily and purposefully engaged in it.

Students are encouraged to:

  • remain engaged with their learning and routines
  • speak to trusted adults when they need help outside of lesson time (eg over lunch in the Bistro)
  • build and maintain strong, supportive friendships
  • develop healthy patterns of sleep, diet, hydration and exercise
  • manage their use of social media and screen time wisely

We are supported by experienced staff, chaplains and external professionals where appropriate. Students are never left to cope alone. At the same time, we help them to develop resilience, perspective and the ability to manage life’s challenges with confidence.

Student Voice and Responsibility

As a growing school, students play an important role in shaping our community. They contribute through leadership opportunities, the School Council, and regular feedback on teaching and learning.

We value student voice, not as an end in itself, but as part of forming thoughtful, responsible young people who are ready to contribute positively to society.

A Culture of High Expectations and Care

Pastoral care at Becket Keys is characterised by clarity, consistency and warmth. We combine high expectations with strong relationships so that every student is known, supported and challenged to grow.

Our aim is simple: to help young people develop the habits, character and faith that will enable them to live well both now and in the future.
